Remote salary negotiation has one extra layer compared to a local job: many companies adjust pay bands by where you live, and it helps to know that going in.
Understand the band before you negotiate
Ask directly whether the role has a location-adjusted salary band or a flat global rate. This single question changes your entire negotiation strategy — there is no point anchoring to a US salary if the company pays by local cost of living.
What actually works in the negotiation
Always get a second offer in parallel if you can — a competing offer is the strongest leverage there is.
Negotiate the full package, not just base salary: equipment stipend, learning budget, extra PTO.
Ask for the offer in writing before accepting verbally, and never accept the first number without at least one counter.
