Many digital nomad visas require health insurance as a mandatory requirement, and even where they do not, traveling without medical coverage is one of the biggest financial risks you can take on unnecessarily.
What it should cover at minimum
- Emergency medical care and hospitalization in your destination country.
- Medical repatriation in case of a serious emergency.
- No geographic limit on coverage if you plan to move between several countries.
- Recognized validity for the visa application itself, if the destination requires it (some countries only accept policies from specific insurers).
Travel insurance vs. digital nomad insurance
Standard travel insurance is usually built for short stays (a few weeks). Insurance built specifically for digital nomads covers long stays (months or years), sometimes includes routine check-ups, and tends to be accepted more readily in visa applications than a generic travel policy.
